Reset & Return “An Experimental Print Retreat" | August 21-23
This multi-day program will be centered on play, experimentation and slowness. We aim to create an experience that allows participants to not put too much pressure on themselves, their practice or the outcome of their work. We want participants to come into this experience with open minds and embrace mistakes, unpredictability and uncertainty. Our collective goal is to reset by getting back in touch with our creative selves through nature.
We aim to break this experience up into four different “workshops” throughout the weekend with ample time to explore, reset and journal on your own:
Welcome Session: Speed Introductions + Welcome Drinks
Body Movement: Cyanotype Workshop
Intention Walk + Short Reading
Communal Collaboration: Creating a Collaborative Publication
Additional Programming:
Screening of Primary Colors: The Story of Corita Kent
RISO Demos, and open studio time all weekend
Welcome Session, Friday August 21st:
During the welcome session, we’ll gather and get to know each other. We want participants to feel comfortable with each other and get to know each other in a fun way. We’ll host a quick “speed dating” style session, where guests can talk to each other for about 3-5 minutes at a time and be able to ask each other questions about their practice, work, or why they wanted to sign up for this retreat. We’ll make notecards with prompts to be laid out around the room for conversation starters. Everyone will be given notebooks (we’ll continue to use these for the rest of the weekend, and participants will be able to take these home as well!) to be able to exchange, sketch in and write down any thoughts that come to mind during the weekend of introspection. The questions/prompts on the notecards will revolve around artist practice, mediums, intention within creating etc.
For example; “What medium do you usually work in? “Is there a material you have been wanting toexperiment with?” or “How do you set your intention when starting to create work?”
Intention Walk + Quick Reading, Sunday August 22nd:
After breakfast on Saturday, we’ll go on a guided hike to search for textures, take photos of things that inspire us and stop midway for a quick reading of an excerpt. The excerpt will come from the book we will be centering the weekend around, and encourage participants to journal their thoughts.
We’ll be searching for textures and anything that inspires us on this walk. We’ll have a variety of tools with us to be able to graft these textures into our prints such as clay for imprinting, charcoal and paper for rubbings and a portable scanner.
After collecting our textures, photos and thoughts we’ll head back to the studio to scan, collage and create our risograph prints. We can use different forms of printmaking like gelli plates to build off of textures we found during the walk to build and layer onto our final risograph prints. The RISO will be on limits throughout the entirety of the weekend in case participants want to work on their prints during free time or later in the day.
Body Movement, Sunday August 23rd:
Focusing on play and experimentation, we’ll create giant cyanotypes with anything we found on our guided hike.
In this workshop, participants will pair up and create prints of their bodies with props/objects we found on our hike, with the final result being a full lifesize version of their silhouette interacting with other organic elements like leaves, flowers or anything else the participant wants to use!
Communal Collaboration: Creating a Collaborative Publication, Sunday August 22nd:
We’ll ask each participant to create a spread that compiles their thoughts, findings and takeaways from the weekend. We’ll compile everyone's spreads and create a communal publication with everyone's words, drawings, pictures etc. This will act as another takeaway from the weekend, and serve as a memento of the retreat and a reminder to go outside and create!
Tuition Includes:
Your weekend covers lodging (all rooms have en-suite bath), farm-fresh meals, and all the workshop materials (RISO, cyanotype, notebooks, the works) — plus some fun side quests and a welcome cocktail to kick it all off. Basically, show up ready to make things; we'll handle the rest.
